The first voices of discontent have surfaced in Paris ahead of David Beckham’s proposed move to PSG with defender Sylvain Armand suggesting the former England captain has nothing left to offer as a player.
Beckham has been strongly linked with a switch to the French capital when his LA Galaxy contract expires at the end of this month, with PSG director of football, Leonardo, says he will do all he can to get the 36-year-old.
While Beckham’s off-field value is without question, many, including France coach Laurent Blanc, former Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane and UEFA president Michel Platini, have suggested his four years away from regular top level European football mean he will struggle should he return.
Stick in your Galaxy: Sylvain Armand doesn’t want David Beckham at PSG
And now Armand has become the first player to openly voice their concern.
He told CFoot: ‘I don’t really want him to join. He will come for our image and it’s good to play with a world star, but then on the field…’
PSG’s wealthy Qatari backers have already bankrolled the club to the tune of around £80million, including £36m on Argentine star Javier Pastore.
Tottenham are also interested in bringing the former Manchester United star back to the Barclays Premier League. QPR were also interested but boss Neil Warnock has admitted defeat in their bid for his signature.
Beckham was voted ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ in the MLS after missing most of the 2010 season because of a torn achilles tendon. His good form has helped Los Angeles reach the MLS final against Houston Dynamo on Sunday.
The other Englishman currently plying his trade in France, Joe Cole, disagrees with Armand.
He said: ‘I have not seen a lot of David Beckham since he moved to USA. He is a fantastic, technical player, one that never relied on speed. I think he is still the player that he always was.’
